Project Overview

Conservation and repair of 17th century roofs and chimneys.

Bramshill House, one of the largest Jacobean mansions in the country, was built in Italian Renaissance style in the early 17th century by Edward la Zouche.  The house was designated a Grade I listed building in 1952. It was used by the Home Office as a Police Staff College between 1960 and its recent sale.

Ellis & Co. carried out a programme of work to rebuild fourteen large chimney stacks, to repair the roofs, and to conserve the windows and masonry.  Our joiners repaired the roof structure with heavy oak timber repairs, and we used salvaged bricks and clay tiles alongside newly commissioned reproductions to repair the roof and chimneys.  Our lead workers replaced eroded leadwork, and our stonemasons repaired and rebuilt the unstable and eroded masonry, particularly of the window surrounds.
