About Ellis and Co

Ellis & Co (Restoration and Building) est 1983 is a family business with over 60 directly employed staff. We have a policy of minimal intervention to conserve and repair historic buildings. We sympathetically renovate and restore properties using original materials and traditional techniques. Our masonry and joinery workshops are in the historic market town of Shepton Mallet. Our clients include National Trust, Historic England, Landmark Trust, PCCs, and private clients.

Our team

Managing Director
 Matthew Ellis, Managing Director, NEBOSH, CSCS Heritage.           Matthew joined the family business working up through the trades, then as an estimator and contract manager before taking the role of Managing Director in 2013. He is largely responsible for the excellent health and safety record, well trained staff and our reputation for high quality work.

Estimating and Surveying

Mark Blannin, Director, Estimator and QS, BSc Building Surveying, member of the Chartered Institute of Building. 25 years experience in new and historic building work and in nearly 10 years with Ellis and Co has worked on a wide range of projects.

Paul Collins, Estimator BSc Building. 35 years experience as a specialist in estimating historic building projects. He has worked on some of the UKs most famous heritage sites including Hampton Court, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.

Daniel Comerford, QS, BSc Quanitity Surveying, MRICS, CSCS. 20 years of experience of working on major projects for large commercial companies. He joined Ellis and Co in 2014 and has worked on some of our more complex programmes of work.

Contract Managers

 Andy Dalgarno, Director and Contract Manager. Mason with 25 years of Site Management experience on our ecclesiastical and complex multi-trade projects. CSCS Heritage Gold Card, SMSTS.

Sean Clarke, Director of Conservation and Site Agent. Stone mason with an MA Degree in Architectural Materials Conservation and 30 years site experience CSCS Heritage Gold Card, SMSTS.

James Hargraves, Small Works Manager. Manages our workshops and stores. Stone mason with 25 years experience. City and Guilds Advanced Craft. CSCS Heritage Gold Card. SMSTS.

Trade Teams

Bank and Fixer Masons and Bricklayers A team of staff experienced working with natural stone, brick and mortars, based in our masonry workshop and on site. 

Joiners and Carpenters A team of skilled wood workers, doing first and second fix work. Structural, decorative, functional, and restorative work on site and in our workshops.

Leadworkers. Our heritage trained craftsmen work with milled and sandcast lead on re-roofing and restoration of historic buildings including detailed decorative lead work and mouldings.

Roofers. After we complete masonry and timber repairs our roofing team can retile, or reslate your roof  using heritage materials, blending with existing materials. Working with our leadworkers to install rainwater goods and guttering.

Plasterers Plasterers specialising in traditional lime coats and finishes

Painter and Decorative Finishers. Tim and Jason are our heritage skilled decorators who work with papers, high quality paints, gilding and washes


We have an ongoing apprenticeship programme and we also support work placements to bring new people into the historic building trades. We develop our exiting team with training in heritage building skills through to an expert level. Let us know if you are interested in joining us.
