Project Overview

Conservation and reconstruction of a lead gothic-revival church spire.

This Gothic Revival Church completed in 1873 has a prominent lead-clad timber-framed spire (or flèche). The original flèche had been replaced with a glass fibre clad, steel-framed structure in the 1970s. Following gale damage this was flexing and water was penetrating the building.

Ellis and Co. removed the damaged flèche in three sections and conserved at our workshops in Shepton Mallet. The steel frame was so badly eroded that we commissioned a new, more substantial frame of galvanized steel.

The steel structure was clad in timber, panels were moulded and installed and new lead ornamentations cast. The whole structure was covered in lead. Permanent ladder access was provided within the flèche, the existing bell was reinstalled and new storm louvres fitted.

Where possible, ornamentations from the original pre 1970s flèche were salvaged, preserved and fitted alongside many newly cast lead ornamentations. When complete the structure was returned to Arundel and craned, in sections, back into position. Once secured in place the lead weathering surrounding the tower was completed to finish the works.
